Resumen
INTRODUCTION. The effects of Therapeutic Effort Limitation policies have seriously affected the lives of the patient, family and healthcare professional, especially nurses, who provide care 24 hours a day. OBJECTIVE. To describe nurses’ experiences with respect to Limiting Therapeutic Effort with patients in critical care units.METHODS. The approach was qualitative, with descriptive design and phenomenological type of study; nine participants were sampled through non-probabilistic sampling and data collected until saturation of meaning units; the instrument used was the semi-structured interview and the data analysis was performed through Colaizzi's method.RESULTS. Six categories emerged as a result of the research: experiences of the nursing professional during patient care in critical care units; elements that stand out in the experiences of the nursing professional during patient care in critical care units; repercussions of self-taught learning in the nursing professional; humanized comprehensive care; knowledge of nursing personnel on the management of the critical patient; and increased patient-family-nurse bonding. CONCLUSIONS. A surprising picture emerged showing how poor communication and lack of continuing education in healthcare staff affects the quality of ICU care. The importance of humanization of care and spiritual connection was highlighted, underlining the urgency for reforms in training and institutional support.
