N2 - Purpose: This study aims to identify the predictive potential of emotional regulation difficulties (ERD) in cyberbullying (CB) in Ecuadorian adolescents. Design/methodology/approach: Descriptive, explanatory and cross-sectional approach with structural equation modelling (SEM) techniques in 904 adolescents (53.5% female and 46.5% male), aged 15–18 years (M = 16.6; SD = 1.15), from nine cities. Findings: The results indicate that the levels of ERD are moderate. ERD explains 19.4% of the changes in variance in cyberbullying. Although overall rates of cyberbullying perpetration were found to be low, the role of emotional regulation, particularly with regard to non-acceptance of emotional responses and difficulties in controlling impulses, is significant in influencing such behaviours. Practical implications: The findings may assist in the development of cyberbullying prevention strategies through the development of emotional regulation processes. Originality/value: This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the emotional underpinnings of cyberbullying and suggests that addressing emotional regulation in adolescents may be a key strategy to reduce its incidence.
