Resumen
The works of Emil Cioran responds to three constitutive elements of a philosophy of the art of living. In the first place, it offers a valid philosophical proposal. In the second place, this philosophical proposal positions itself firmly in concrete existence, although this entails the refusal of any systematization or elaboration of a coherent theoretical framework. Thirdly, in line with the profound pessimism that marks his perspective on that existence, Cioran’s main concern is the search for ways to endure life. In order to best elucidate Cioran’s philosophy as an art of living, we follow his consideration of three common evasions of existence. (Academic) philosophy, religion, and art (notably music), can offer three ways to not face one’s own life, but rather escape from it. By contrast, Cioran’s philosophy as an art of living suggests we reject attempts to control through knowledge, passions, and finally any form of action. As a result, Cioran’s proposal consists in an attitude of resignation.
