Blockchain technology is a revolutionary science that has achieved a great impact in various areas since the moment it was introduced in the markets, allowing all network participants to reach an agreement, digitally registering all the data stored in a chain of blocks with a common history available to all, thus eliminating the possibility of any fraudulent activity in transactions and without the need for a third party intermediation. Every transaction on a blockchain is secured with a digital signature that proves its authenticity and due to the use of encryption and digital signatures, the data stored on the blockchain is tamper-proof and change-proof. The objective of this review is to obtain information on the blockchain, establishing a definition, origin, operation, existing types according to the structure and some of the current applications in various areas.
