Abstract

This article identifies the economic sectors of the province of Tungurahua-Ecuador, so that the actors of the territory make optimal public and private investment decisions and thus boost the economy of this province. This is how, based on the estimation of the Matrix, provincial input product and using an indirect approach known as the RAS Method, the key sectors in the economy of Tungurahua are prioritized by applying the quantitative method, called the Rasmussen Method; and the qualitative method, known as perception analysis. The results obtained through the Rasmussen Method showed that the key sectors in the economy of Tungurahua-Ecuador are animal husbandry; manufacturing of textile and clothing products; manufacturing of leather and leather goods; paper and paper product manufacturing; manufacture of base metals and products derived from metal; electricity and water supply; and real estate activities. It is concluded that the prioritization of key local economic sectors is not entirely linked to the strategic direction for the change of the national productive matrix, denoting the weakness in the articulation of the economic sectors of Tungurahua-Ecuador with a view to strengthening the local productive system.
