Abstract

The migrations of various human groups in Ecuador have a close relationship with the formation of their ethnic and political identity, as well as the formation of regions and groups with local power. The first wave of Chinese migration, for example, fit into the alien and different images and representation; Its dissemination throughout the national territory, especially in the provinces of the Coastal region, was interpreted from both hospitality and fear of the stranger. This article examines from a historical perspective how the arrival of Chinese migrants was seen as a danger for the construction of a nation similar to the European one, a project that, imagined by the political and economic elites of the country, would be achieved by attracting immigration from the old continent to the South American territories.
