Socio-Ecological Systems

Organization profile

Organization profile

The SSEs research group is concerned with the nature-society relationship with an emphasis on the relationship between conservation and development in protected areas such as Galapagos, but also in the urban environment in relation to green spaces in cities such as Quito. We are interested in understanding the close interrelationships and interdependencies between social and ecological systems, which are also intertwined with political, technological and cultural elements. Ultimately, this understanding also contributes to reflect on the current climate crisis and sustainability in the framework of the common home.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 13 - Climate Action
  • SDG 14 - Life Below Water
  • SDG 15 - Life on Land
