The Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE) is an institution of higher education and also the oldest private university in the Republic of Ecuador. Founded in 1946 by the Society of Jesus and the Archbishop of Quito, Card. Carlos María de la Torre. Aurelio Espinosa Pólit, S.J. was co-founder and its first rector. The first faculty to function was that of Jurisprudence; its first dean was the diplomat and Chancellor of the Republic, Julio Tobar Donoso.
