Research Group in Microbial Ecology and Applied Microbiology

Organization profile

Organization profile

The GEMA group is interested in studying the potential of microorganisms present in different habitats, characterizing and preserving them for future research and/or applications. Knowledge of the microbiota in a biodiverse country is vital for the conservation, proper use and recovery of natural resources and habitats of the territory. The probability of finding innovative alternatives or potential solutions to priority socio-environmental problems for the country and the world (ecosystemic, agricultural, industrial, pharmacological, health, search and generation of products or services, among others) in these tiny beings is considerable. In this sense, the group is particularly interested in seeking practical applications to microorganisms, in commitment to the real needs of the country, especially in the areas of bioremediation and pollution prevention, search for sustainable and socio-environmentally responsible agricultural and industrial alternatives, and microbiological options applied to human, animal and environmental health (One Health current), for the promotion of a bioeconomy that contributes to the development of the country and the change of its productive matrix.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 2 - Zero Hunger
  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 14 - Life Below Water
  • SDG 15 - Life on Land
